Dr. Jamie Burr of the University of Guelph’s Department of Human Health and Nutritional Sciences is featured in a CBC The National story on the efficacy of blood flow restriction bands.
Burr is an expert in fitness assessment and performance evaluation in U of G’s High Performance and Health Research Laboratory
Blood flow restriction is one of the latest training trends for high performance athletes. On The National, Burr, whose lab has studied the practice for about 10 years, said wearing a band during a light workout tricks the body into reacting as though it is working harder. They can improve performance, he said.
“It’s not going to take someone from zero to hero,” he said, but added that once the heavy training is complete, restriction bands are “sort of an icing on the cake.”
