Workers at several major grain terminals in Metro Vancouver went on strike on Tuesday. The strike could be devastating to Canada’s farming industry. Grain farmers say more than half of Canadian-grown grain moved through these terminals last year.

Dr. Michael von Massow, a food economist in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, studies food supply chain management. He is available to discuss how this job action could affect Canada’s grain supply.

“These terminals are a critical bottleneck in the grain export supply chain, especially at this time of year,” he says. “There are not a lot of alternatives for moving grain out of Western Canada to our grain customers. There is not only a high cost but real reputational risk for Canada as an exporter.”
