Wildfires are currently threatening large portions of southern California, including suburban Los Angeles.
Dr. Ze’ev Gedalof is director of the Climate and Ecosystem Dynamics Research (CEDaR) laboratory, and a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics.
He says these fires are being amplified by a severe drought in 2024 and unusually strong Santa Ana winds, which blow dry air from inland toward the coast during the cooler months. These challenges are compounded by naturally flammable vegetation, and extensive development in the wildland-urban interface.
Gedalof is available for interviews on the California wildfires.
