As U of G prepares to welcome students to campus, residence move-in will take place primarily on Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31. During this time, several University of Guelph roads will be closed and traffic on nearby streets will be affected.  

Increased traffic on Guelph roads

Heavier-than-normal traffic is expected on Gordon Street between Stone Road and College Avenue, Stone Road, University Avenue, Smith Lane and Victoria Road. Pedestrians and cyclists travelling on Gordon Street while students move onto campus are encouraged to use caution at busy intersections.  

Construction on College Avenue will continue throughout move-in weekend and could result in increased traffic in other areas.  

U of G road closures

These University-owned roads will be closed to everyone but new students moving in on Friday and Saturday: 

  • South Ring Road 
  • East Ring Road 
  • Dundas Lane 
  • Macdonald Street 

Some students will move in between 4 and 8 p.m. on Thursday evening. East Ring Road and Dundas Lane will be closed during this time. 

All fire and safety routes will remain open on campus throughout move-in weekend to allow for any emergency responses. Drivers in and around campus are expected to obey all traffic rules and regulations. 

Bus stop changes

Buses will not travel onto campus during move-in weekend to help reduce congestion.  

City of Guelph transit buses and taxis will operate out of the Movati Athletic Centre parking lot (80 Stone Road W.) Further details on the routes affected by bus detours can be found on the Guelph Transit webpage.

GO Transit will offer stop locations on Gordon Street (locations for Westbound 29 and Eastbound 33, Eastbound 29 and Westbound 33). 

Parking lot closures

These parking lots will be closed Friday, Aug. 30 and Saturday, Aug. 31, and all vehicles must be removed before 7 a.m. on Friday: 

  • North martialing lot – P3, P5, P19, P20, P21, P44, P47, P51 
  • East martialing lot – P18, P16 (Dundas Lane and East Ring Road) 
  • South martialing lot – P31, P8, P9 
  • North long-term parking – P23, P24, P49 
  • East long-term parking – P7, P14, P15  
  • South long-term parking – P13 
  • Student Housing staff and volunteer parking – P11 

Parking lots open

If you can, please limit or reduce your trips to campus during move-in. If you do need to access campus, these parking lots will remain open for staff and off campus students. 

  • East side – P12, P10 
  • West side – P25, P26, P30, P59 

To access the east side of campus, you must enter campus off Stone Road by the Arboretum Village and park in P12 and P10. 

To access the west side of campus, we recommend you come in from the Hanlon Expressway to Kortright Road West to Gordon Street. You may access the west side of campus via South Ring Road West, McGilvray Street off Gordon Street, or Smith Lane off College Avenue.
