Dr. Kate Parizeau

Dr. Kate Parizeau, professor in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, appeared on CBC Radio’s The Current to discuss Canada’s food waste problem.

Parizeau said much of the waste problem is invisible to most Canadians “because our food system is so invisible to us,” adding that a lot of food waste happens before it reaches us: on the farm, in distribution chains, in factories and behind closed doors in retail.

She then discussed several possible solutions, from better best-before labels, to apps that save perfectly edible produce from the dumpster.

Parizeau is a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment and Geomatics who studies food waste management practices.
