History professor Dr. Matthew Hayday, professor in the College of Arts, discussed tensions around Canada Day with CTVNews.ca.

Hayday said that Canada Day has always been controversial because it’s a country that is the product of different compromises and different groups living together.

“It’s not surprising that the day celebrating the country is also going to be full of debate,” he said.

Chair of the Department of History, Hayday researches nationalism and identity politics, Canadian political history and Canada Day celebrations.
