Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics professor Dr. Katie Lebel discussed equal pay in sport with the Toronto Star, amid news that the winner of the men’s event at the National Bank Open tennis tournament will receive twice as much as the woman winner.

Lebel said the factors that determine prize money are “deeply institutionalized” and any changes would be slow and would require “bold leadership” to follow through.

A professor in the Department of Management, Lebel researches gender equity, sport fandom, marketing and communications. She is an affiliated scholar at Tucker Center for Research on Girls & Women in Sport and a member of the National Network for Research on Gender Equity in Canadian Sport.
