The University of Guelph will install Dr. Mary Anne Chambers as its next chancellor June 14 during a ceremony in the W.F. Mitchell Athletics Centre.

The installation will be part of the convocation ceremonies for the College of Engineering and Physical  Sciences, which will be held at 4 p.m. in the athletics centre.

Chambers will address graduates following her installation.

Doors open at 3:30 p.m. The ceremony is free and open to the U of G community and the public.

A former Ontario cabinet minister, longtime U of G supporter and lifelong education and community advocate, Chambers was unanimously elected by the University’s Senate in April.

She will be U of G’s 10th chancellor.

Chambers was elected to the Ontario legislature in 2003. She served as minister of training, colleges and universities and minister of children and youth services.

She was a member of U of G’s Board of Governors from 2010 to 2016, where she served on the Board’s audit and risk committee and physical resources and property committee and chaired the working group on responsible investing.

Before election to public office, Chambers held progressively senior roles with Scotiabank and eventually served as senior vice-president.

She has personally funded more than 60 scholarships for students at Ontario universities and colleges, including at U of G, where she created an entrance bursary for Black students in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences.

As chancellor, Chambers will preside at convocations, confer all University degrees, provide strategic advice to the president and act as an ambassador. As the University’s senior volunteer, she will represent its interests with all orders of government. The chancellor is also an ex-officio voting member of the University’s Senate and Board of Governors.
