Dr. Scott Weese, a professor in the Department of Pathobiology, spoke to CBC’s Second Opinion about the current state of monkeypox in Canada.

Weese said the “big-picture concern” with monkeypox is the risk it may spread back to animals and create a new reservoir.

“If we get this into wildlife, then we get a situation where there’s going to be an ongoing risk — like there is in endemic areas of Africa.”

The chief of infection control at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) and director of the Centre for Public Health and Zoonoses (CPHAZ), Weese researches infections in animals, emerging infectious diseases and infection control.
