Even during COVID-19 lockdowns, students found Dr. Martin Holland’s door “open” when they needed help navigating academic decisions in the bachelor of landscape architecture (BLA) program. Holland’s commitment to student success as a BLA faculty adviser in the School of Environmental Design and Rural Development (SEDRD) helped earn him the University of Guelph’s 2022 Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising Medallion.
The annual award recognizes an outstanding contribution by an individual or team to undergraduate academic advising at U of G.
Nominators praised Holland for finding creative ways to connect with and provide exceptional support to BLA students. “Martin is a champion of students who exudes compassion,” says nominator Dr. Sean Kelly, a SEDRD professor in landscape architecture.
Student letters of support for the nomination praised Holland for his approachability and availability, his care and dedication, and his infectious enthusiasm for the profession. Students also remarked on Holland’s valuable support of the Landscape Architecture Student Society.
Holland was chosen as this year’s recipient by U of G’s Council on Undergraduate Academic Advising selection committee. Starting in 2022, eligibility for the award was extended to all roles that formally include academic advising.
The Excellence in Undergraduate Academic Advising Medallion will be presented to Holland this fall.
