Political scientist Dr. Jordi Diez spoke to NPR’s The World for a radio interview on the precarious win of same-sex marriage rights in Chile.

Diez noted that Chile’s decision this month to legalize same-sex marriage has been met with backlash by the country’s religious conservative activists and may be at risk of being overturned.

A professor in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, Diez researches many areas of public policy in Latin America, including the politics of gay and lesbian rights. He is currently working on a comparative research program on the expansion of gay and lesbian rights in Argentina, Chile and Mexico, examining the factors that account for the variance in the expansion of these rights in these countries.
