U of G’s Shine: Mental Well-being Awareness Week runs Mar. 15 to 20. The week promotes mental wellness and provides students with resources to help support their mental well-being.

“Discussing mental health is as important now as ever,” says Alison Burnett, director of Student Wellness. “We need to create opportunities and space for people to come together to talk about their mental well-being, especially as we continue to live and learn in this virtual environment.”

The week’s events are designed to help support student mental health and include:

  • panels and discussions
  • workshops and training
  • social and physical activities

All Shine: Mental Well-being Awareness Week events are free. Students, staff and faculty are encouraged to attend. U of G community members are also able to send SHINE Packs – anonymous virtual care packages – to others. To send a SHINE Pack, simply email shinepack@uoguelph.ca between March 14 and 22 with the recipient’s name and email. You and the recipient will also be entered to win a $25 gift card!

Panels to focus on Student’s Mental Health

On March 16, the SHINE Mental Well-Being Committee will host a new discussion-based workshop that focuses on the stigma men face when discussing their mental health, how to help men reach a turning point for seeking help, and opening the conversation surrounding men’s mental health. The Open Dialogue of Men’s Mental Health workshop features a combination of speakers openly sharing their experience of their own mental health, educational content on the University of Guelph support resources, and a Q & A and discussion with the audience.

March 17 is the Let’s Talk Mental Health Panel, the week’s capstone event. The event features undergraduate and graduate student panelists who will share their own experiences with mental health, including resources they found helpful. The panel is followed by a Q & A period. The event takes place March 17 from 5:30 to 7 p.m
