The University of Guelph runs one of the most successful United Way campaigns of any post-secondary institution in Canada. In 2018, we raised more per person than any Canadian college or university. While COVID-19 has turned our world upside down, campaign organizers believe we can continue making a difference together this fall.

Staff co-chair Jill Ferguson says the 2020 campaign will be different than any U of G has ever run before, but she is optimistic about what lies ahead. “This year is like nothing we’ve ever faced,” says Ferguson. “We have some community members who are struggling with reduced family income and sometimes reduced access to services they rely on.”

“We have many others who are seeing a bit of a financial benefit because they’re not having to pay for parking or on-campus lunches,” she adds. Ferguson hopes those who can give will because the funds raised in 2020 are needed now more than ever. “I’m excited to try new and innovative ways to bring the University of Guelph community together for such an important cause,” she says.

The University of Guelph campaign welcomes Prof. Daniel Gillis, School of Computer Science, as the campaign’s new faculty co-chair.

“I’m really excited to be taking on the role of faculty co-chair for the University of Guelph’s United Way campaign,” says Gillis. “While COVID-19 has had a huge impact on our community, it also presents us with a unique opportunity to come together to support the organizations helping those who need it most.”

The United Way’s Holly Freeman steps in as campaign manager for U of G and will liaise between the United Way and the steering committee, supporting our campaign’s efforts. The United Way Guelph Wellington Dufferin recently welcomed a new executive director, Glenna Banda.

On behalf of the U of G United Way steering committee, Ferguson and Gillis thank all the volunteers who are committed to making our community a better place to live for everyone. More information about this year’s campaign will be available in the weeks ahead.
