The University of Guelph has named Byron Sheldrick as acting dean of the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences (CSAHS) following leadership changes to take effect this summer.

Sheldrick, CSAHS’s associate dean (academic), will assume the role Aug. 2 when CSAHS dean Gwen Chapman becomes interim provost and vice-president (academic). Charlotte Yates, current provost and vice-president (academic), begins her term as interim president Aug. 2.

Sheldrick and Chapman will both serve while the University conducts a formal search to fill the provost position permanently. As such, Prof. Paula Barata has been named CSAHS’s acting associate dean.

Sheldrick, the former chair of the Department of Political Science, joined U of G in 2006 from the University of Winnipeg. He also taught law at Keele University in the U.K. He holds a bachelor’s degree from Carleton University, a law degree from the University of Toronto, and a master’s degree and PhD from York University. His research focuses on the intersection of law and political science, with particular interest in social movements, human rights and social justice.
