On Sept. 19, U of G will fly the Métis flag in recognition of Powley Day. The day marks the Supreme Court of Canada’s decision to recognize Métis harvesting rights as protected under the Constitution.

“Powley Day provides us with an opportunity to learn more about Métis culture, rights and activism,” says Kathryn Hofer, Interim Director (Student Experience). “The University of Guelph is honoured to come together with the Grand River Métis Council to raise the flag in recognition of the legacy of Steve Powley and to the acknowledge the many contributions of Métis people on campus, in our local community and across Canada.”

Powley Day programming starts at 10 a.m. in front of the University Centre and includes:

  • Remarks from the Grand River Métis Council President and Aboriginal Resource Centre staff
  • Raising of the Métis flag

Following the formal program, all are welcome to visit the Aboriginal Resource Centre in the Federal Building (620 Gordon St.) for coffee, tea, snacks and conversation.

Members of the Grand River Métis Council will host a Métis 101 session from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for all those interested in learning more about Métis cultures, traditions and languages.
