Prof. Alfons Weersink, from the University of Guelph’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics (FARE), appeared in a Globe and Mail article about the explosion of new micro-breweries in Alberta.
Weersink has studied the craft-beer industry with FARE colleague Prof. Mike von Massow. He told The Globe that smaller breweries can overcome the challenges of competition by opening up a taproom, where they can tap into a large market.
He added that a good product along with good marketing paves the way for success in the micro-brewery market and any small business market.
Weersink studies effects of new technology and government policies on farmer choices, agri-food structure and agricultural markets. In 2014, he was named a fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society.
