Federal, provincial and municipal governments are still finalizing regulations about the use of recreational cannabis, which will be legal starting Oct. 17.

The University of Guelph is working to develop a cannabis policy that will comply with all government regulations.

Specifically, the University is responding to the provincial government’s recent proposal to permit the use of recreational cannabis in public spaces.

We will need to work through the issue thoroughly, including consulting with the external community and the University community, as we develop a University-wide cannabis policy.

This transitional period will likely last eight to 12 months. During this time, the recreational use of cannabis will be prohibited on all University of Guelph campuses and U of G-managed field stations, and we ask that people remain respectful of others. At University of Guelph-Humber, the policy for Guelph-Humber will apply.

The Student Housing Services’ Cannabis Policy remains in effect and prohibits delivery to and growing of cannabis in student residences, which are not private property.

The University’s Human Resources Policy 511 prohibits the consumption of recreational cannabis during work hours.

The University will continue to accommodate the use of medicinal cannabis with proper medical documentation.
