Jacob Uskoski headshotA U of G computer science student appeared on CBC News on June 18 for a story about how the World Health Organization (WHO) is adding video gaming disorder to its international classification of diseases.

Jacob Uskoski, who recently graduated from U of G’s School of Computer Science, spoke about his personal struggle with a gaming disorder. He talked about its physical and psychological impact, and how his gaming habits affected his family.

Researchers said clear scientific evidence shows gaming can be considered a disorder, but game manufacturers disagree and say that gaming is a pastime that is being unfairly stigmatized, the CBC story explained.

Uskoski told CBC News he hopes to see more research on gaming disorders. Uskoski has not played a game in more than a year, the story reported.

The WHO estimates that only about 2-3 per cent of gamers meet criteria for having a disorder.
