A new Statscan report reveals that cannabis use has more than doubled among Canadians 15 and older in the past 30 years.

U of G history professor Catherine Carstairs has written about the history of illegal drug use in Canada. She appeared in a Feb. 22 edition of CBC’s The Current and talked about the history of marijuana prohibition in Canada.

Carstairs told CBC that marijuana was added to Canada’s schedule of illegal drugs in the 1920s, not so much because it was present in Canada but because Canadian officials learned about problems arising from marijuana use in other countries.

Carstairs is available for media interviews.
