Prof. Daniel Gillis appeared in a Jan. 16 Motherboard story about a new decentralized Internet network – or “mesh” network – that will improve Internet connectivity in Rigolet, a remote coastal Labrador Inuit community.

Gillis, a professor in U of G’s School of Computer Science, helped develop an app for Rigolet residents to track climate change that can impact day-to-day activities such as fishing, hunting and travelling on the ice. He told Motherboard that poor Internet service in Rigolet has made running the e-Nuk app a challenge. He said the improved Internet connectivity will help residents use and exchange information through e-Nuk.

Gillis research focuses on statistics, computer science and community-engaged scholarship.
