U of G Prof. Robert Hanner appeared in a CTV story Dec. 19 about using lasers to test for unwanted animal products in meat samples.

The story highlighted U of G’s recent discovery that one in five sausages contained animal products not listed on the label. This could have been caused by economically motivated food fraud or a simple mix-up, Hanner told CTV.

The story highlighted a new laser technique developed by researchers at the University of British Columbia to determine what kinds of meat are in a sample.

Hanner, a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology, studies biodiversity, DNA barcoding, evolution, ichthyology, molecular authentication of foods, and molecular biosurveillance and diagnostics.
