University of Guelph graduates Ambera Wellmann and Wallis Cheung are among a list of 15 up-and-coming Canadian artists, according to notable.ca. Wellmann, who recently defended her master’s thesis in U of G’s School of Fine Art and Music, uses porcelain and visual motifs of 19th-century paintings to critique how women were represented. Toronto-based Cheung, a 2008 U of G graduate, told notable.ca that painting enables her to compress “banal and ordinary events into lavish visual experiences with a sense of purpose.” Both Wellmann and Cheung were among 15 artists from across the country selected as finalists for the 2016 RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Wellmann also won the Joseph Plaskett Award for graduate-level painters earlier this year.
