University of Guelph faculty and staff can learn how they can make a difference in developing nations around the world during four “Leave for Change” (L4C) information sessions to be held in February.

Past participants will share their experiences in L4C, a U of G-sponsored program that allows regular full-time staff and faculty to volunteer for short assignments in developing countries.

All information sessions will take place from noon to 1 p.m. as follows:

  • Feb. 4, UC 103. Participants who served in Botswana, Guatemala, Nepal and Malawi.
  • Feb. 8, Alexander Hall 168. Vietnam.
  • Feb. 23, MacKinnon 233. Malawi.
  • Feb. 29, Alexander Hall 168. Peru.

L4C is offered through Uniterra, a joint initiative of World University Service of Canada and the Centre for International Studies and Co-operation. U of G supports up to seven faculty and staff each year to participate in L4C.

Uniterra aims to involve individuals and organizations in Canada and in developing countries to reduce poverty by achieving the UN Millennium Development Goals.

Under L4C, qualified employees use their vacation time to complete international assignments lasting three to four weeks, working with development professionals in host countries.

“Through Leave for Change, U of G provides staff and faculty a unique opportunity to get a taste of international development and the chance to use their skills and talents to build capacity in a developing country,” said Evelina Rog, a learning and development consultant with U of G’s Human Resources department.

Applications for Leave for Change will be accepted until March 7.
