The University Centre’s four main elevators (two near the north side and two near the south side of the building) will be included in a modernization project starting April 21 that is expected to be completed by Aug. 29.
The project includes replacing or refurbishing the elevators’ equipment, replacing the interiors of the elevators, and adding controls and handrails to comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act. The project aims to achieve a significant improvement in the elevators’ functionality.
Most of the work will take place in the penthouse, but some work, such as replacing hall fixtures, will need to be completed on each floor. When the dates for work scheduled on each floor are known, they will be shared with the University community. Work that takes place in the basement is not expected to affect access through the area.
At least one elevator in each main bank (north and south) will always be available for use. The plan is to work on one south elevator and one north elevator at the same time.
Any work that causes excessive noise will take place outside of regular work hours.
Project manager Shane Danis will provide weekly updates after construction begins. The main contact for any concerns is construction co-ordinator David Loates at Ext. 52958. Danis is the back-up contact and can be reached at Ext. 56905.
