Mid-way through U of G’s 2013 United Way campaign, volunteer canvassers paid a visit to Guelph Wellington Women in Crisis where they learned about the programs that are funded, in part, by donations from the University community. Representatives from Wyndham House and Family Counselling and Support Services also spoke about the programs they offer to youth and adults in Guelph and Wellington County.

“Without community members investing in the community through United Way, we simply would not be able to operate,” said Kate Power, speaking about the walk-in counseling services provided by Family Counselling and Support Services. Launched in 2011, she says the number of users for the Open Access service has doubled in two years. “When someone is in the moment of deciding to change their life, that’s when they need us. You’ve got to be there when people are ready.  You just have to be there.”

U of G volunteers also received thanks for United Way funding that provides emergency housing at Wyndham House for youth aged 16 to 21 and helps Women in Crisis maintain four county offices for its rural women’s support program.

The agency tour was organized by Guelph Wellington Dufferin United Way to thank and encourage University staff and students as they push to reach their $590,000 goal by Dec. 1. The University campaign has raised $390,000 to date.
