The University of Guelph community helped raise more than $8,600 to provide services, equipment and opportunities for people with spinal cord injuries (SCI) during the Guelph Wheels in Action June 17.

The annual fundraiser was held on campus, attracting dozens of participants and volunteers; the funds will go to local programs and initiatives for people with SCI.

Wheels in Action is a Guelph spin on the annual Wheels in Motion event started by Olympic wheelchair champion Rick Hansen. U of G has held an annual event since 2004 to raise money, support and awareness.

Wheels in Action and Wheels in Motion have helped raise nearly $169,000 locally to support numerous programs in the Guelph area. Projects include new wheelchairs and adaptive equipment, a ceiling track lift system for KidsAbility, fitness equipment for the Victoria Road Recreation Centre, the St. Joseph’s SpinFit program and an adjustable medical table for U of G’s Student Health Services.
