Recently retired professor Rob McLaughlin, former dean of the Ontario Agricultural College (OAC), is among the recipients of an inaugural Governor General’s Award in Celebration of the Nations Table. The honour recognizes and celebrates efforts to improve the quality, variety and sustainability of Canada’s food table.

The new award includes five categories for achievement in creativity and innovation, education and awareness, leadership, mentorship and inspiration and stewardship and sustainability. Two awards were presented in each category. There is also a youth category that recognizes one young person who is inspiring their peers in this area.

McLaughlin was honoured in the education and awareness category. He was recognized for “dedicating his life to actively promoting the growth and study of our distinctly Canadian food culture.” His work as OAC dean from 1990 to 2000 was mentioned, as was his involvement in the Guelph Food Council, the Guelph Food Technology Centre, the Guelph Food Inventory, the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, and the Canadian Culinary Book Awards.

McLaughlin also served as U of G’s acting vice-president (alumni affairs and development) and associate vice-president (agrifood and partnerships). He is the past board chair of the George Morris Centre, Canada’s agricultural think tank; the Ontario Agricultural Experience Inc.; and the Ontario Agricultural Leadership Trust.
