Ontario Agricultural College food economist Dr. Mike von Massow, and Arrell Food Institute director Dr. Evan Fraser discussed high food prices with The Globe and Mail.
Von Massow explained why transportation and weather are still driving up costs, adding that as inflation rates dropped, many “had hoped to begin to see some relief.”
Fraser noted that globally and historically, Canadians are still experiencing “very, very low food prices” but added that many Canadians have food insecurity concerns because of other rising costs, such as housing.
A professor in the Department of Food, Agriculture and Resource Economics von Massow researches retail and restaurant food demand, supply chain management, and value chain structure and performance.
Fraser, a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment & Geomatics, helps lead the Food from Thought initiative and holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Food Security.
