Agriculture economist Dr. Alfons Weersink appeared on several CBC Radio stations to discuss how the Bank of Canada’s latest interest rate hike will affect farmers.
The rate increase adds to farmers’ expenses and any debts they have, but its effects depend on how farmers leverage their costs, Weersink said. He also explained why current food prices are so high and how much of sales revenue goes back to farmers.
A professor in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, Weersink researches the feasibility of new agricultural technology and policy.
