Paul Kelly, the research and apiary manager at U of G’s Honey Bee Research Centre (HBRC), discussed the public’s concern over honeybee colony losses with The Globe and Mail.
“We’ve always considered beekeeping as an agricultural activity, but when we started to see a jump in colony losses …. lots of other people piled on and pursued it as an environmental issue, not realizing these weren’t native species …. Honeybees have … a strong support system. But native bees, they’re kind of on their own,” Kelly said.
Kelly has worked with bees for more than three decades and produces videos on beekeeping for HBRC’s YouTube channel.
