Dr. Thomas Graham, a professor in the School of Environmental Sciences who specializes in controlled environment agriculture, discussed the news that researchers have successfully grown plants in soil from the moon with CBC’s The Current.
Graham said the success has direct and immediate implications for agriculture in extreme environments on Earth, like the Arctic or a desert, and for addressing food insecurity in those climates.
As the PhytoGro Research Chair in Controlled Environment Systems, Graham’s research projects include the use of vertical for tree crops and bioregenerative life-support for human space exploration. He is also a jury member of the Deep Space Food Challenge.
