Dr. Mike von Massow, a food economist in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, spoke to The Globe and Mail on why delayed food deliveries to grocery stores are resulting in older produce staying on shelves.
“Leafy greens and berries are the ones most likely to be affected” because they’re more fragile, he told the news outlets.
He added that with products like bananas, delivery delays are less noticeable because those products ripen in domestic distribution centres.
Von Massow researches retail and restaurant food demand, supply chain management, and value chain structure and performance in the Ontario Agricultural College.
