Dr. Simon Somogyi, a professor in the Gordon S. Lang School of Business and Economics, is featured in a Toronto Star article on the rising cost of living during the COVID-19 pandemic, and especially the rising cost of food.
Somogyi is quoted saying higher food prices severely impact those with lower salaries. “We know that they disproportionately impact women, Indigenous populations and people of colour,” said Somogyi.
Food costs rose 4.7 per cent in November from a year earlier. Housing, energy and transportation costs have also gone up.
Somogyi is the Arrell Chair in the Business of Food and director of the Longo’s Food Retail Laboratory at U of G. His research focuses on agri-food value chain analysis and management, and food consumer behaviour.
