Dr. Jennifer Silver contributed a commentary to The Hill Times about the possible risks of concentrated and foreign ownership in fisheries.
“We are in a moment where the public is growing weary of transnational corporations and opposes speculative and excessive foreign investment in things like housing and farmland,” Silver wrote, adding that “transparent governance of a valuable public resource” depends on rigorous examination of ownership patterns.
Silver is a professor in the Department of Geography, Environment, and Geomatics and has studied the social and policy dimensions of fisheries for more than 15 years.
