New University of Guelph student Emir Dag is featured in a July 29 Toronto Star story about the top Toronto District School Board (TDSB) high school scholars for the academic year just completed.
Dag moved from Mardin, Turkey to Toronto just four years ago, unable to speak any English. Remarkably, he was one of only three TDSD graduates to earn a perfect 100 per cent average in the final year of high school. His mother also attended high school in Toronto and graduated this year.
According to the Star, Dag was sent by his family to study in Canada because this country offered him excellent opportunities in higher education. He worked extremely hard to learn English and excelled in all areas of study at Burnhamthorpe Collegiate Institute.
He is now enrolled at U of G for the fall semester and will study biomedical science. He hopes to become a physician.
