University of Guelph research that found cases of COVID-19 are on the rise in younger people in the Greater Toronto Area and Hamilton was featured in the Toronto Star.

Led by engineering professor Ed McBean, the research team analyzed age trends in Ontario’s daily COVID-19 case counts and found that while the curve was flattening for other age groups, it was still rising among those under-20, especially in Peel and Toronto.

The U of G researchers found that among older age categories, cases reached their peak around mid-April and are starting to decline.

Under federal funding last month from the Alliance COVID-19 grant program of the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council, the team is using artificial intelligence models to collect and analyze data on regional coronavirus infection levels along with demographic and behavioural information.

The researchers aim to predict future impacts of the pandemic in health care in Canada.
