Prof. Scott Weese was featured in a Consumer Reports article about the link between antibiotic overuse in pets and subsequent disease outbreaks in humans.
A professor of pathobiology at the Ontario Veterinary College at the University of Guelph, Weese has extensively studied antimicrobial resistance in pets, such as cats and dogs.
He offered tips for keeping pets healthy so that they can avoid bacterial infections requiring the use of antibiotics.
Weese holds a Canada Research Chair in Zoonotic Diseases and studies factors associated with the transmission of infectious disease from animals to humans. Many of his findings have been translated into practical infection-control measures, such as guidelines for the judicious use of antibiotics in pets.
