A University of Guelph professor was invited to share her expertise on farming and mental health as part of a panel discussion before the House of Commons standing committee on agriculture and agri-food on Sept. 27.

The committee is studying the mental health challenges that face Canadian farmers, ranchers and producers.

Prof. Andria Jones-Bitton, a professor of epidemiology in the Department of Population Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College, shared her expertise. She studies the epidemiology of mental health and resilience in the agricultural and veterinary sectors.

She told the House agriculture committee that Canadians cannot have a sustainable food system if farmers are struggling with their mental health. Her comments appeared in an Oct. 1 iPolitics story.

Her research has been featured on CBC News, Global News, CBC Radio Canada International, Toronto Star and CTV News.
