A reorganization of the University of Guelph’s Community Relations Office will add capacity and help strengthen relationships across campus and beyond, says director Sue Bennett.
“We’ve been working steadily over the past several years to break down the barriers between and among University departments and the broader community,” she says.
“Now, under the direction of Daniel Atlin, vice-president (external), we’re undertaking several new initiatives to make U of G resources, services and facilities a part of the larger local infrastructure.”
Atlin adds: “Community Relations will work closely with the departments of Alumni Affairs and Development and Communications and Public Affairs to better leverage opportunities with external partners and stakeholders.”
A new community relations web page provides a “one-stop shop” for resources, services, programs and events connecting the University and community. This includes links to U of G’s Community Resource Guide, which outlines campus services available to the general public.
The website highlights the University’s partnerships with local economic development and community organizations, charities and residents, including Innovation Guelph, Wellington County, the City of Guelph’s Department of Economic Development and Tourism, and the Guelph Chamber of Commerce.
Claire Alexander, special projects manager, will focus on community relations initiatives and events. David Aitken will handle special projects in community engagement.
The Community Relations Office undertakes collaborations with municipalities, funding agencies, non-governmental organizations and corporations.
“This fosters a mutually beneficial exchange of knowledge and resources,” Bennett said.
Partnerships with the public and private sectors enrich teaching and learning and promote stewardship of place, she said.
Community Relations also co-ordinates visits to campus by official delegations and dignitaries; directs University-wide protocol; and manages convocation and campus events.
