Dr. Georgia Mason

Behavioural biologist Dr. Georgia Mason, director of U of G’s Campbell Centre for the Study of Animal Welfare, offered her perspective on the conditions of enclosures and behaviour of animals at roadside zoos in an episode of CTV News’ W5.  

The current affairs program examined welfare issues in privately-owned roadside zoos. While reviewing secretly filmed footage of the zoos, Mason called the enclosure conditions disturbing and said the animals’ behaviour indicated distress. 

Mason is a professor in the Department of Integrative Biology who studies how animals fare in captive housing conditions, including conditions that are too small or monotonous to allow an animal’s natural behaviour.
