Prof. Simon Somogyi, the Arrell Chair in the Business of Food at the University of Guelph, commented to Global News about why meat prices are beginning to fall.

Somogyi, who co-authored Canada’s Food Price Report, noted that meat prices are dropping for the first time in close to 10 years.

He said the main reason is that cattle herd sizes are returning to levels seen before the large drought that hit the Prairies in 2014 and 2015. As herd sizes grow, supply and demand are equalizing, he said.
