CTV visited the University of Guelph’s Ontario Veterinary College Dec. 21 to interview Prof. Jeffrey Wichtel for a story about Ontario’s vet shortage.

Wichtel, OVC’s dean, told CTV that the number of practices looking for veterinarians has tripled in the last three years. He said the demand stems partly from increasing numbers of pet owners and from more people taking better care of their animals. Wichtel also said that it’s a good time for students to consider a career in veterinary medicine.

David Sparks, a third-year OVC student, was also interviewed by CTV. Sparks said he’s not worried about finding work after he graduates, as there is a demand for veterinary expertise in areas from large-animal medicine to government to food safety.

Wichtel researches and writes about animal nutrition, reproduction and disease, livestock production and veterinary education.
