U of G undergraduate student Simon Parlow was one of two Canadians who received 2011 summer research awards from the American Society of Hematology (ASH).

A second-year student in U of G’s biomedical sciences program, he’s been spending his summers at home in Kingston, Ont., where he’s assisted the research of Queen’s University professor Paula James. The $5,000 ASH grant supported Parlow’s work this summer on a genotyping project with Prof. James and post-doc Natalia Rydz.

ASH awarded a total of 43 Trainee Research Awards in 2011 to university and medical students and medical residents studying blood diseases. The program is designed to encourage medical trainees to pursue research in hematology.

“The 43 recipients…represent the future of medical research, and we hope that their exposure to hematology will inspire these bright minds to pursue careers in the field,” said Dr. J. Evan Sadler, ASH president and a professor at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.
