U of G Begins Construction on New 1,250-Bed Student Residence

Building marks investment in University’s future by expanding on-campus housing capacity

Construction has officially begun on a new student residence representing an investment in the future of the campus that will bring 1,250 new on-campus beds to the University of Guelph for the next generation of Gryphons.

The 78 College Ave. student residence project, located at the southwest corner of McGilvray Street and College Avenue, will provide residence spaces primarily for first-year undergraduate students.

“The University of Guelph is committed to investing in housing, infrastructure and services to support our growing population and deliver a high-quality student experience,” says Sharmilla Rasheed, vice-president, finance and operations. “This new residence is a significant and exciting step in delivering on that commitment.”

The residence will set a new benchmark for sustainable, community-centred living for U of G students. Along with adding more beds, 78 College Ave. will feature a 500-seat dining hall, study and community spaces on every floor and two outdoor courtyards.

“We’re building more than a place for students to live,” says Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor. “We’re creating a community that will be an important part of their experience at U of G, and one that will welcome generations of students in the years ahead.”

The residence was designed with accessibility in mind, including accessible units and barrier-free access to the building. The design incorporates Zero Carbon Building principles, with a focus on reducing energy use and operating more efficiently.

“This new modern living space will support the exceptional students that come to the University of Guelph each year,” says Dr. Byron Sheldrick, interim provost and vice-president (academic). “We look forward to welcoming students into this new residence building and giving them the best on-campus living experience our University has to offer.”

Expanding U of G’s on-campus housing

This new residence building supports U of G’s plan to respond to sustained demand for on-campus housing and is the first step towards thousands of additional beds for students in the coming years, as outlined in the University’s forward-thinking Real Estate Strategy. The expanded capacity will help support first-year students as they begin university life.

Moving forward with the new residence reflects important collaboration with the City of Guelph, who played a vital role in advancing the project. From early planning stages to preparations for construction, the City was a critical partner in helping make this residence a reality. Recent changes to provincial legislation have accelerated student housing developments, supporting U of G’s commitment to expanding on-campus residence.

The project received final approval from the Board of Governors on Oct. 21, and U of G officially began construction on Oct. 30. The University plans to welcome students into the 78 College Ave. building in fall 2029.

Current information, including future construction notices and frequently asked questions, is available on the 78 College Ave. student residence project webpage.
