The Office of Diversity and Human Rights invites you to a special screening of a historically significant documentary, followed by an engaging panel discussion about its central themes of race, inclusion and the Canadian experience.
Gridiron Underground chronicles the early struggles of some of the first African-Americans to play in the CFL. It isn’t just a film about football, it’s about the freedom of black athletes who broke down social barriers and achieved a sense of belonging.
The film is produced and narrated by John Williams Jr., who played for the Toronto Argonauts and Hamilton Tiger-Cats in the CFL.
Joining Williams on the post-screening panel will be Ingrid Berkeley-Brown of Peel Regional Police and University of Guelph students Malissa Bryan and Gabriel Broderick. The panel will be moderated by Patrick Case, University of Guelph Human Rights Legal Support Centre. Courtney Stephens, Adrian Tracy and Brian Simmons of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats will also be in attendance.
Admission is free but seating is limited and registration is required. To register, visit the Diversity and Human Rights website.
