This introductory session will provide an overview of Indigenous Data Sovereignty (IDS) and why it matters for researchers working with Indigenous Peoples, communities, and data. The workshop will introduce key concepts and considerations for working respectfully and responsibly with Indigenous data throughout the research process.

Participants will explore what Indigenous Data Sovereignty is, why it is important, and what researchers should be thinking about when planning, collecting, managing, sharing, and preserving Indigenous data. The session will also highlight considerations that may arise through the research ethics process, including questions researchers may encounter when working with Indigenous communities and data.

This session is designed as a foundational awareness workshop for researchers who want to better understand Indigenous Data Sovereignty and identify ways to incorporate respectful and ethical data practices into their research.
