The Alberta referendum is just weeks away in which residents will respond to a series of questions from the provincial government, including whether Alberta should commence the process to hold a future referendum on separating from the rest of Canada.
Dr. Julie Simmons, professor in the Department of Political Science, is available to discuss the referendum, the separatist movement and populism in the province, and the 10 questions Albertans will face. She is also available to discuss how the separatist movement in Alberta compares to that in Quebec, and how both affect federal-provincial negotiations in Canada moving forward.
Simmons studies issues of accountability and democracy in intergovernmental relations and has authored many academic publications on the dynamics of federal-provincial relations in the Chretien, Harper and J. Trudeau eras.
She was a frequent commentator during the most recent Ontario and federal election cycles; and recently appeared on CBC News to discuss separatist movements in Alberta and Quebec.
