Gift from The Joyce Family Foundation Creates Bursaries for Rural Students

Rural students with financial need will be eligible to receive new support to launch their studies at the University of Guelph thanks to a generous $2.5-million gift from The Joyce Family Foundation.

The gift is the largest in U of G’s history to establish an endowment for needs‑based awards.

This investment has established The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary for Rural Students, an endowed fund that will provide up to four bursaries at $22,000 (payable over four years, $5,500/year) for registered full-time students entering any program who have graduated high school within the last two years and who demonstrate financial need. This support will open new pathways for rural youth.

“In honour of Ron Joyce’s enduring belief in the power of education, the Joyce Family Foundation is proud to establish this bursary program at the University of Guelph,” said Rob MacIsaac, board chair of The Joyce Family Foundation. “This initiative celebrates determination and potential, supporting students as they work toward their dreams.”

The Joyce Family Foundation is a private, family foundation created by the late Ronald V. Joyce, who is best known as the legendary Canadian behind the success of the Tim Hortons franchise. His lifelong commitment to helping young Canadians reflects a deep-rooted sense of responsibility to give back to his community.

“This remarkable gift from The Joyce Family Foundation creates dedicated support for rural students facing financial barriers,” says Dr. Rene Van Acker, president and vice-chancellor. “It sends a powerful message that their potential is recognized and that they can begin their studies at the University of Guelph ready to succeed.”

Through this gift, The Joyce Family Foundation and the University of Guelph are expanding opportunities to education and advancing their shared commitment to Improve Life.

Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and be entering any undergraduate program within two years of high school graduation. Preference will be given to applicants whose home address is in a rural Ontario community.
