U of G has claimed a spot among the top 10 per cent of universities across the globe for its commitment to sustainability.
According to the QS World University Rankings: Sustainability 2024, U of G ranks 139th globally out of 1,403 institutions based on three categories: environmental impact, social impact, and governance, climbing more than 200 places since last year.
Out of 31 Canadian institutions included, U of G ranked 17th.
This significant jump from last year’s ranking was largely driven by U of G’s improvements in the areas of environmental education and knowledge exchange, equality and health and wellbeing. Overall, these rankings aim to assess universities around the world by measuring each institution’s ability to tackle the world’s greatest environmental, social and governance challenges.
“I am immensely proud of our University’s achievement in these rankings. Building a sustainable tomorrow is one of our strategic priorities here at U of G,” says Charlotte Yates, U of G president and vice-chancellor.
“Together, we continue to cultivate a community that not only excels academically when it comes to sustainability but is also leading the way globally on environmental stewardship and with our social impact,” Yates adds.
Thank you to all of you, our University community members who have contributed to U of G’s sustainability efforts and helped us earn this incredible achievement. It’s our faculty, staff and students who drive our commitment to sustainability and embed our shared values into our research, education and sustainability practices across campus.
The purpose of the QS sustainability rankings is to assess which universities are making positive change for people and the planet, which aligns with many of the priorities in the U of G Strategic Plan. The rise in U of G’s ranking speaks to the progress we’ve been making on these priorities.
As we continue to enact our Strategic Plan, we will strengthen our current sustainability efforts and commitment to investing in an exceptional student experience inside and outside of the classroom.
