Dr. Paula Brauer stands against a grey brick wall, smiling, wearing glasses with a necklace over a black top.University of Guelph professor emerita Dr. Paula Brauer, a former dietitian and faculty member in the College of Social and Applied Human Sciences, spoke to the Toronto Star this week about the reality of using diets to achieve weight loss.

Diets tend to work only for a short period, Brauer said, until the body’s regulatory systems kick in and the taste and smell of food become more attractive.

Brauer’s work in the Department of Family Relations and Applied Nutrition included the development and testing of new approaches to improve the effectiveness of dietary counselling services in the health system.
